Start with the concrete

The condition of the slab determines what happens before a coating is applied. RS Surface Coatings evaluates the surface, discusses how the space will be used, and identifies preparation and compatible repairs. The written scope should also describe access, items that must be moved and the return-to-use schedule.

1. Grind and prepare

Mechanical preparation removes weak surface material and helps create the profile required by the selected coating. Dust is removed and the concrete is checked for conditions that affect adhesion. Repairs must be compatible with the complete assembly.

2. Apply the MVB epoxy base coat

RS Surface Coatings uses a moisture vapor barrier epoxy layer in its applicable flake system. Its purpose is to help manage vapor moving through the concrete within the chosen product’s tested limits. It cannot replace repairs to active leaks, drainage or other sources of bulk water.

3. Broadcast decorative flake

Decorative flakes are broadcast into the specified receiving layer. Some assemblies require a separate receiver coat over the MVB. The product instructions and the actual RS Surface Coatings specification determine how those layers are combined.

4. Scrape and remove loose flake

After the receiving layer has cured as required, loose material is removed and the surface is scraped and cleaned. This step prepares the texture for the protective finish.

5. Apply the compatible protective topcoat

The finish should be selected for the intended exposure, cleaning needs and traffic. The written proposal identifies the topcoat and any necessary texture. No universal topcoat chemistry or cure time applies to every job.

Protect the floor during cure

Temperature, humidity, ventilation and the selected products affect timing. Wait for the project-specific instructions before walking on the floor, moving heavy items or parking a vehicle. Keep those instructions with the maintenance and warranty documents.
